APPLIED PSYCHOLOGIST

Sometimes it can be difficult for organizations, institutions and foundations to reach certain target groups. For certain target groups  its still have difficult finding a connection with social services and mental health care. This also applies to people with a non-western background. Ethnocentrism is a factor that many non-western clients are confronted with; the attitude whereby one's own environment, people or culture is consciously or unconsciously used as a benchmark to judge the rest of the world. So what you may consider as a traditional factor, may be the standard for someone else. Everyone looks at the world through his or her own glasses. Therefore, the offer that you deem appropriate, will not necessarily suit someone from a different culture.

It is possible that you have a question to which there is no direct answer. Research on this matter is then crucial. The research method is determined by your request or subject.

dealing with non-western cliënts

Do you want to offer extra training to your employees or volunteers when dealing with clients with a non-western background? Then additional training on how to deal with these clients may mean something to you.

This program is an extension of the education program  "Growing up in the West with mental health problems". The program is aimed at people with an Islamic background. Discussing psychological complaints is very difficult for this target group, due to the large taboo and imposed stigmas. In order to reach clients and offer adequate help, there must first be insight into the problem. The training is aimed at providing insight into the perception of a person with a non-western migration background and provides tools for dealing with this target group.

growing up in the west with mental health problems

Introduction of mental health issues within the Islamic community

Everybody struggles now and then, whether it's something big or small, we all have our own issues and hardships. However, these problems can be difficult to discuss with others. Having a mental illness, for example, is still a big taboo within different communities. They are often hard to deal with and make life more difficult for the person dealing with mental health issues. What are these taboos based on? What does Islam say about this? How can you combat this? During the lecture I discuss these questions, and more, from my own story as a refugee, growing up in the West and my psychological complaints that I have experienced from birth.

Taboos and stigmas have a negative influence on mental health problems. A taboo is something that cannot be done or said. Taboos come indirectly from imposed stigmas: a negative attitude towards mental health issues that can damage someone's reputation. And this can only reinforce the problem. These imposed stigmas are largely not in line with reality. During this program social stigmas within the Islamic community and the effect of this matter will be discussed.  The most common stigmas that are incorrect will also be scientifically discussed.

Every success story is unique. My story is about overcoming fears,
contrasting with the culture in which you grew up, learning to cope with the pressure of the environment and my own chronic mental and physical complaints. I believe in the power of experience. Through setbacks you get to know yourself the best: through that acquired self-knowledge you learn to reflect on yourself. This insight is an important step in the change that you want to make in your life. It also gives you the power to overcome your fears: anyone who has knowledge of their own points for improvement can learn how to deal with this and develop themselves further into the person they want to be.
